Introducing the Discography
This discography is a comprehensive catalogue of discrete performances of Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere that have been preserved as recordings. Important re-issues are included, only where the nature of the re-issue is considered particularly significant – so you will not find the hundreds of instances where certain recordings of the Miserere have been endlessly included in compilation albums. Where an existing recording can be accessed via YouTube, links will be provided, however the wealth of additional material published on that has not yet been included. That effort will form a separate phase of the overall project to follow in the future.
To get started, click the “Discography” menu icon, or choose “Browse recordings…” from the Discography menu.
Navigation
Navigating the discography is similar to browsing a blog, except that the earliest releases appear first. The title of each entry includes the year the recording was released and the name of the choir that made the recording, e.g. “1964 – Choir of King’s College, Cambridge” (note that the performance was recorded in 1963, but released in 1964). The archive view contains summary data about each recording, and the detailed view for each entry can be revealed by clicking the “View recording…” button. Once in the detailed view, you can browse chronologically from one entry to the next in either direction using the navigation links to the left or right immediately above or below the data.
The data is mostly self explanatory but a detailed definition of each data field is available. It is also possible to view the data in table format, (which supports sorting the data in reverse order) and browse the recording locations data using Google Maps.
Common Fields
In summary and detailed views, various fields contain data that can be selected to reveal more information about that term across the entire discography. For example, clicking on “David Willcocks” as the conductor will reveal a list of all the entries for which “David Willcocks” is the conductor, and clicking on the name of a choir will reveal all the other recordings made by the same choir. You might also view all the recordings made in a certain country, or all the recordings from a certain label. The full list of active fields is:

In the summary view, clicking the album cover art navigates to the detailed view. Images in the Album Art / Liner notes section will open in a lightbox – click the ‘X’ or press Escape (ESC) to close. Groups of images will open in a gallery – click < and > to navigate or use the < > keys on your keyboard.
