John Boija (www.boija.com), who knows a thing or two about tape, shared these thoughts with us about this particular recording:
There is infinitely more sound in the tape, than in a vinyl, which still always contains more recorded information than makes it to digital. Rarely has sound reproduction been richer than in the period 1954-1960 when HiFi went stereophonic. These tapes sound as fresh today, as they did 65 years ago. Direct copies from the master tapes without any edits or compression. To people who have only heard modern recordings, hearing a 1950s 2-track reel-to-reel tape can be a frightening experience!
This tape was released more than a year before stereophonic LPs came into production. So this was the only way to enjoy stereophony up to the summer of 1958. Once stereo was pressed in vinyl, compression had to be introduced. So this is still today, as good as it gets. In fact, this double chorus recording is one of the most impressive examples of how natural sound could be captured in those days when the enthusiasm for technological advance and improvement were in focus, rather than cutting cost or using as little digital storage space as possible, without the human ear discovering the loss. But sound is so much more than what we hear. We feel the bass and the sound waves with our entire bodies. So not even analogue head phones can convey the full spectrum.
