1953 – Harvard Glee Club

“Chansons and Motets” – an album jointly released with the ladies of Radcliffe Choral Society – is the first known published recording of the Miserere by the Harvard Glee Club – America’s oldest collegiate glee club. Early recordings by the Harvard Glee Club are important, as they form a reference for Glee Club performance practice given the edition of the Miserere set for male voices by A. T. Davison, and published as part of the “Harvard University Glee Club Collection” by E C Schirmer Music Co in 1922.

1955 – The Choir of the University of the South

A second album of choral music released by the University of the South Choir (the first having been released in 1951). Includes “ten religious numbers, many of them sung acapella, including the music of Bach, Jan Smit, Flors Peeters, Jacob Handl and Vittoria” (from the Sewanee Alumni News, 1955).

And in January, 1957, the Chorus will be commercially recorded – binaurally – by the Westminster Recording Company (The Item of Millburn and Short Hills, Millburn, New Jersey, 30th August 1956)
